As mentioned a while back, Sunny Start-Up is a business member of Zero Waste Canada. For the past three months my boyfriend and I, who are both working from home, have been tracking our discards. After consistently achieving more than 90% diversion from landfills AND incinerators (no zero waste to landfill greenwashing here), we are now officially “On the Road to Zero Waste.”

What makes our case a bit special (and tricky) is that our workday doesn’t necessarily follow a 9-to-5 routine. In fact, we sometimes work until 10pm. Hence, we have decided to not separate our private discards out and instead track our entire household waste. Given this tracking system, an average diversion rate of 95% is not so bad, don’t you think? But we’re getting better and better. And you know what? It’s super fun!

Want to join Sunny Start-Up Marketing and Rodolphe Destombes Translations on this adventure? Join Zero Waste Canada today and walk the road to Zero Waste with us.

After a full year of tracking our waste, both of our businesses will be eligible to become Zero Waste recognized and after an “on site audit”, we could even become Zero Waste Certified. And that’s exactly what we’re aiming for: Zero Waste Certification. Because both of our businesses are more “responsible,” than most businesses including those that consider themselves “above average” on the CSR front.

How responsible? I’m glad you asked:

  • I’m only working with socially responsible businesses. No greenwashing, no rip-offs, no lies. If a business doesn’t fit my values, I don’t accept their project.
  • Over 50% of my clients are nonprofits. And yes, they get a special rate.
  • The other 50% of my clients are start-ups and small businesses who often struggle to get quality marketing help for a reasonable price, yet they need it the most.
  • As a member of 1% for the Planet, I give 1% of my annual revenue to a nonprofit member to support their growth.
